MY STORYLong, long ago, I was born in Ireland. After many "interesting" camping adventures in Europe as a child, I woke up one morning in 2007 and thought, "Wouldn't it be great to do this every weekend? What could possibly go wrong?". And so, I packed my bags for Switzerland.
MY CAREERI was a happy teenager, playing my electric guitar in bands while writing machine code on my home computer.
Suddenly, at just 17, came the shocking news that I could not do this forever, and had to pick a "proper" career. I figured that Aeronautical Engineering was the closest thing to Rocket Science that I could study. So, off I went full of excitement to Queen's University of Belfast, and graduated with a BEng three years later. Then came job decision time. Since the demand for spandex-clad rock guitarists was terrible in 1990, and demand for computer programmers was taking off, I decided to earn a steady wage working for Ford Motor Co doing CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) in Process Control Systems. And so it was that I found myself in the world of IT, along with other shiny new graduates with degrees in psychology, geology and astrophysics. With well-rounded IT skills and an enthusiasm to travel, I was fortunate to be able to find interesting work in a variety of industries - automotive, airline, software - until finally, in 2002, I upgraded my suit and entered the financial sector. |
